Your ceiling fan circulates the air, keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter, and creates a relaxing, peaceful atmosphere. It doesn’t make a lot of noise, but when it does there’s usually something wrong that needs to be addressed. It could be as simple as dirty fan blades or a loose light fixture. Fortunately, these issues are pretty easy to fix.
If the ceiling fan is making a clicking sound it may be because one or more of the blades is loose. You can try tightening the screws on each of the blades to see if that makes a difference. If not, the problem is probably that something (like a light fixture or the ceiling canopy) is rubbing against the motor housing. Use a ladder to get a closer look and look for loose screws or anything else that might be causing the rattling sound.
Clicking and rattling can also be caused by a dimmer that is not meant for use with your ceiling fan. If this is the case, replacing it with a standard dimmer should stop the problem.
A grinding noise is a more serious issue that indicates there is unnecessary friction taking place. This can happen if the blade irons are scraping against the motor housing or because of bad bearings in the motor. It will be best to replace the fan if you notice either of these problems. You can try oiling the bearings, but they will likely not last long if you do this.
