Ceiling fans are a popular way to cool a room and lower air conditioning costs. They also come in a variety of styles to complement any decor. However, a ceiling fan needs to be mounted properly to ensure optimal airflow. The most important factor is the room height. You want to make sure the blades are at least seven feet from the floor and about 30 inches away from any wall or door. The slope of the ceiling will also play a role in determining which mount is best for your project.
Flush mounts anchor the fan directly against the ceiling, which is a great solution for low-ceiling rooms. They’re also an excellent choice if your room has a light fixture that would hang too low for the fan to function properly. However, a flush-mount fan will not move as much air as a model that uses a downrod.
For higher ceilings, a downrod-mount fan is necessary. A downrod is a metal rod that extends the fan to increase the distance between the blades and the ceiling, optimizing airflow. There are many lengths available, so it’s best to consult a sales associate or the manufacturer for guidance. A downrod-mount fan should also be hung at the proper height for safety. To find the right downrod length, start with your desired hanging height, then subtract six to nine feet from your ceiling height. Once you’ve determined the appropriate size, add an additional two to four feet of downrod for a secure fit.
