Fixing Ceiling Fan Grinding Noise

ceiling fan grinding noise

When a ceiling fan starts to make grinding noise it is often the result of one or more loose parts. Fortunately, the majority of the time there is an easy fix for these problems. If the noise is a clicking sound it could be that the junction box that connects to the ceiling is loose. This is an easy problem to fix simply by ensuring the screw connecting it to the ceiling is tight.

Another common ceiling fan issue is a scraping sound. The fan blades may be rubbing against the motor housing cover, causing friction that will eventually cause the housing to wear out or even break. Turn off the fan and use a ladder to get a close look at the fan housing. If a blade is not as straight as it should be, gently bend it with your hands or a metal straightener to keep it from hitting the housing cover in the future.

If your fan is equipped with a light kit, then you will need to check the screws and fasteners that attach the lighting to the housing to make sure they are tightly fastened. Many of these are recessed so they are difficult to access, but it is still important that you take the time to ensure all the screws and fasteners are tight.

It is also a good idea to regularly inspect the fan and motor housing for signs of dust or other debris that can cause an imbalance or friction that can result in noisy operation. By taking the time to do these checks and making any necessary adjustments, you can help to extend the life of your ceiling fan and prevent it from making unwanted noises.
