One of the many reasons to install a ceiling fan is to provide air flow, but it is important to know the right way to turn the blades when the weather changes. For instance, when it is warm outside, a counterclockwise direction would push the air downward. The opposite is true when it is cold, so the direction switch should be installed so that it is the same as the temperature outside. Alternatively, you can turn the fan counterclockwise to make it more energy-efficient during the winter.
Before you install a ceiling fan, you should first remove the blades to allow you to reach the switch. You may need a ladder or step stool to reach the switch cup. Typically, a ceiling fan direction switch is equipped with a sliding toggle with two positions. You should note which one is on the inside of the ceiling fan casing. Changing the direction of your ceiling fan is not difficult, but it should be accompanied by the instructions for your particular model.
If you’ve installed ceiling fans along vaulted ceilings, you should run them counterclockwise year-round. These ceilings are too high for a wind chill to be felt on the floor. In addition, you should make sure that the switch is set to the counterclockwise direction during the summer. This way, the warm air will be pushed down, keeping the elevated area from overheating or collecting warm air. And because fans do not lower the temperature directly, they have an added benefit.
