While you may have noticed your ceiling fan is spinning counterclockwise in the summer, you can reverse the direction in the winter to create a warming effect. In fact, rotating a ceiling-mounted fan in a clockwise fashion will push the cool air up to the ceiling while forcing warm air near the ceiling back down. The general rule is to run a ceiling-mounted fan counterclockwise in winter. The reason for this is that warmer weather will require higher fan speeds. It’ll also save you energy costs.
In the winter, ceiling-mounted fans should be set to rotate clockwise. When adjusting the speed of a ceiling fan, keep the rotation slow, as the wind chill can be quite high. You can test this by standing under it and watching the blades spin. Changing the direction of your ceiling-mounted fan is not as hard as you may think if you know what you’re doing! But if you’re unsure, you can always reverse the direction manually.
