How to Replace a Ceiling Fan Light Switch
If your ceiling fan has a pull chain light switch, the pull chain may be loose. If you cannot see any loose wires or voltage coming from the ceiling fan, the switch may be faulty. You must determine if the power is coming from the box. If so, replace the ceiling fan light switch. Then, replace the cover plate and screw the new one in place. Then, you can enjoy the light and fan in your new home!
To replace a ceiling fan light switch, pull the two bare wires that connect to the light. The bare wire is attached to the top screw of the new light switch. Tighten the wire hooks to make sure they make solid contact with the screw. You will need two wires for each switch. The first wire should be pointed downward to create the classic breeze effect. The left-hand wire should be pointed up in the winter to recirculate warm air down the walls.
The wires connected to the switch are connected to the fan. The left-hand switch should be tied to the four wires of the fan to turn on the light. The right-hand switch should be tied to the other switch so that it will turn off the fan. Then, tie the two wires together at the wall box, but don’t forget to disconnect the other wires. If you still cannot detect the problem, you can use a voltage tester to check whether power is coming from the fan to the switch.
