If you already have a ceiling fan in place, adding a light kit is a simple and convenient way to upgrade its functionality and enhance its aesthetics. Whether you opt for an integrated, universal, bowl, branched or customizable light kit, these kits are compatible with many popular ceiling fan models and offer homeowners the flexibility of choosing the type and wattage of bulbs they want to use.
Before installing a ceiling fan light kit, make sure that your ceiling fan has the dedicated wiring needed to support a new fixture. Typically, this is separate from the wiring that powers your fan and can be accessed by removing the decorative center plate on top of the fan. Once the fan is removed, look for white (neutral) and black wires that correspond with the color-coded wires on your new light assembly. Screw the new housing cap back into place and connect the wires to one another using a pair of matching wire connectors, then cover them with electrical tape for additional protection and insulation.
Before starting your installation, turn off the power to the ceiling fan by turning off the fuse or circuit breaker that controls it. Then remove the existing fixture from the ceiling and disconnect its wires, making sure to keep track of any parts or caps that you need to put aside for later use. Reconnect the wiring for your new light kit according to its specific instructions, then mount it and screw any necessary covers or shades onto its surface. Once everything is secure, reconnect the electricity and test the ceiling fan and light to ensure they are working properly.
