A ceiling fan is a great way to increase the air circulation in a room. However, it’s important to know how to properly wire your fan so that you can avoid electrical problems and safety hazards. Wiring a ceiling fan can be tricky, but this article will help you understand how to connect the wires and make sure they are safe.
The power source in this circuit comes in at the switch box and a 3-wire cable runs to both the ceiling fan and light fixture. The white wire from the supply is spliced into the black wire going to both switches. At the switches, the common on one switch is connected to both the white and black wires for the fan & light while the other switch’s common is connected to the black wire for the fan.
This wiring diagram shows how to connect a single-way switch for the light and a 2-way switch for the fan. The power from the breaker box is run through the first switch to the double switch box and then a 3-wire cable is run up to the ceiling fan junction box.
Put electrical tape on both ends of the white wire to indicate that it is a “hot” wire. Connect this wire to the black/hot wire on the supply side of the switch. Then, connect the black wire from the switch to the black fan wire and secure them with a wire nut. Lastly, connect the remaining wire, orange in this diagram is for bare copper, to the green ground wire in the fan.
